The label on the bird's nest box contains important information to help you use it correctly and safely. But many people only look at the brand name and price. This article helps you read each item on the label, especially the different date formats that can easily cause confusion, and know what to do when the label is blurry or missing information. Specific labeling regulations are issued by regulatory authorities and may change; this article only guides how to read it.

Information that should be on the label:

  • Product name: correct type (refined bird's nest, raw bird's nest, stewed bird's nest, etc.).
  • Ingredients: for ready-to-eat stewed bird's nest, should list bird's nest, sugar, auxiliaries, additives (if any).
  • Net weight: weight of the product excluding packaging.
  • Manufacture date and expiration date.
  • Batch number (if any).
  • Instructions for use and storage.
  • Name and address of the responsible organization/individual.
  • Origin (especially for imported goods, Vietnamese supplementary labels are required), see Vietnamese bird's nest and imported products.

Reading dates: formats that are easily confused

  • Day/Month/Year (31/12/2026) is common in Vietnam, but some imported goods use Month/Day/Year (12/31/2026) or Year-Month-Day (2026-12-31). When the day ≤ 12, it is very easy to misread; ask the seller or check the instructions on the packaging.
  • NSX / MFG / Mfd: manufacturing date. HSD / EXP / Exp: expiration date. Best before / BBE: best used before this date.
  • "Shelf life 24 months from NSX": you need to calculate from the manufacturing date.

The shelf life of dried bird's nest and bird's nest soup is different.

  • Dried bird's nest: longer shelf life but depends on storing in a sealed, dry place; after opening the box, use soon and keep it sealed, see proper bird's nest storage.
  • Ready-to-steam bird's nest: shorter shelf life, needs to be refrigerated according to the label; once opened, should be used quickly.
  • Homemade steamed bird's nest: consume immediately; any leftovers should be refrigerated and used within a short time.

When the bird's nest is within its expiration but shows unusual signs

The expiration date is valid only if stored properly. If the box is damp, has an unusual smell, or shows signs of mold even if still within the expiration date, do not use; see identifying spoiled bird's nest and storing bird's nest in the rainy season.

When the label is faded, missing, or suspected to be tampered

  1. Take photos of the label and packaging from multiple angles.
  2. Ask the seller about the production date, expiration date, and batch number.
  3. Compare the information on the box, invoice, and delivery receipt.
  4. If the information does not match or the seller avoids responsibility, do not use it and request a return; see warranty and return policy.

Keep notes to avoid forgetting

  • Write the opening date on the packaging.
  • Use the old box first, the new box later (first in, first out).
  • For gifts, check the expiration date before giving.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you use it one day past the expiry date?

It is not recommended to use expired products; buy just enough to use within the expiry date.

If the label only has "month/year," how should it be calculated?

It is generally understood to be valid until the end of that month if the label shows the expiry; check with the manufacturer to be sure.
